How to Remove Forklift Tyre Marks from Warehouse Floors
If you manage a warehouse, the floor is one of the hardest-working parts of the building. Forklifts, pallet trucks and staff cross it all day, and dust, tyre marks and spills build up quickly. A scrubber dryer is the most effective way to keep it clean, but the first decision is often the hardest: should you choose a walk-behind machine or a ride-on?
Both types wash and dry the floor in a single pass, so the floor is clean, dry and safe to walk on straight away. The difference lies in how much ground they cover, how they handle your layout and how much they ask of the operator. This guide explains how to choose.
What each type of machine does
A walk-behind scrubber dryer is pushed by the operator, much like a large mower. It is compact, easy to manoeuvre and suits smaller floor areas, narrow aisles and spaces with lots of obstacles. Machines such as the Tennant T360 are popular for smaller units, offices within warehouses and areas around racking.
A ride-on scrubber dryer carries the operator on board. It has a wider cleaning path, larger tanks and is built to cover big open floors quickly. In warehouses, the Tennant T12 and Viper AS530R are compact ride-on options for mid-sized sites, while the Tennant T20, Tennant T7 and Viper AS1050R are designed for larger floors and heavier use.
Start with your floor area
The size of the area you need to clean is the biggest factor. As a general rule:
• Smaller units and mezzanines are usually best served by a walk-behind machine.
• Mid-sized warehouses benefit from a compact ride-on, which covers ground much faster but still fits between racking.
• Large warehouses and distribution centres need a full-size ride-on to clean the whole floor within a shift.
If cleaning currently takes so long that parts of the floor are only done once a week, that is usually a sign the site has outgrown its machine.
Check your aisle widths and obstacles
Measure the narrowest aisles you need to clean and note any tight turns, doorways, columns or ramps. Compact ride-on machines are designed to work in tighter spaces, but very narrow aisles or cluttered areas may still be better suited to a walk-behind. Many warehouses find the ideal answer is a ride-on for the main floor and traffic lanes, with a smaller machine for the awkward corners.
Think about the operator
Walking behind a machine for hours across a large warehouse is tiring, and tired operators clean less consistently. A ride-on machine lets the operator sit comfortably, see clearly ahead and keep a steady pace for longer. That usually means more of the floor is cleaned to a consistent standard, with less time spent on each shift.
Battery life and shift patterns
Most modern scrubber dryers are battery powered, which keeps them quiet and free of exhaust fumes indoors. Before you choose, think about when cleaning takes place and how long the machine needs to run in one go. Battery run time varies between models and battery options, so it is worth checking against your shift pattern and charging arrangements. Our team can talk you through the options for each machine.
Looking at the cost over time
A ride-on machine costs more to buy than a walk-behind, but the purchase price is only part of the picture. Labour is usually the biggest cost in floor cleaning, so a machine that cleans the floor in half the time can pay for itself through saved hours. Leasing can also spread the cost into manageable monthly payments, which makes a larger machine easier to budget for.
When you need both
There is no rule that says you must choose one or the other. Many sites run a ride-on scrubber dryer for the main warehouse floor and a walk-behind or compact machine for offices, welfare areas, mezzanines and tight spaces. The right mix depends on your layout, and a short site visit is often the quickest way to work it out.

FAQs
Is a ride-on scrubber dryer worth it for a small warehouse?
For a small unit with narrow aisles, a walk-behind machine is often the better choice. A compact ride-on such as the Tennant T12 or Viper AS530R becomes worthwhile as the floor area grows and cleaning time starts to stretch.
Can a ride-on scrubber dryer fit between warehouse racking?
Compact ride-on models are designed for tighter spaces, but it depends on your aisle widths. Measure your narrowest aisles before choosing, or ask us to assess the site.
Do scrubber dryers remove forklift tyre marks?
Yes. Regular scrubbing with the right brush or pad and a suitable detergent removes most tyre marks and stops them building up along traffic routes.
Can I lease a scrubber dryer instead of buying one?
Yes. Leasing lets you spread the cost of a new machine into monthly payments. Our team can explain the options.
Can you service the scrubber dryers we already have?
Our engineers carry out servicing and repairs on commercial cleaning machines. Get in touch with the make and model and we will confirm how we can help.
